Dig and Discuss: Gentleman Jack

It’s the 19th Century, not the easiest time for a young lesbian to follow her heart and try to marry her girlfriend. Jeff Salzman of Daily returns to WYT to discuss the Modern, Post-Modern, Traditional, and Integral nature of the HBO/BBC co-production, “Gentleman Jack.”

The Secret Teachings of All Ages w/ Mitch Horowitz

Today’s Guest: Mitch Horowitz

Well, that was a pretty damn awesome way for me to spend an hour. I am a huge fan of Manly P. Hall’s magnum opus, “The Secret Teachings of All Ages,” and to get to dig into it with Mitch Horowitz, author, lecturer, leading expert on esoterica, and Manly P. Hall aficionado… can’t be beat!

In this episode, we discuss some personal favorite chapters and stories from my beloved and much poured over copy of SToAA. Including…

What is the hidden meaning of the Philosopher’s Stone?

Is there a hidden, possibly immortal brotherhood of wise masters that has helped to shepherd human civilization over millennia?

Was the brilliant English statesman and philosopher Francis Bacon a member of this brotherhood, and was he the hidden hand behind famous works of literature that have shaped our development for the last 400 years? Was Francis Bacon the secret mind behind the works of Shakespeare?

If you are a fan of anything even remotely esoteric and you don’t know about this book… this episode of What’s Your Theory…? will be only a tiny but delicious taste of the massive feast of information and historical and existential rabbit-holes that is…

An Encyclopedic Outline of

Masonic, Hermetic,

Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian

Symbolical Philosophy

Being an Interpretation of the

Secret Teachings concealed within the Rituals, Allegories

and Mysteries of all Ages.

How’s that for a subtitle?

And for fans of Manly P. Hall and/or Mitch Horowitz: don’t miss this… Starting on June 21st, Mitch will be delivering a 12 episode video lecture series originating from the University of Philosophical Research specifically about this book, “The Secret Teachings of All Ages.” You can sign up for the course @

Mitch Horowitz is a writer-in-residence at the New York Public Library, a lecturer-in-residence at the University of Philosophical Research in Los Angeles, and the PEN Award-winning author of books including Occult AmericaOne Simple Idea: How Positive Thinking Reshaped Modern LifeMind as Builder; and the The Miracle Club: How Thoughts Become Reality. Mitch has written on everything from the war on witches to the secret life of Ronald Reagan for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Salon,, and Politico.

The Washington Post says Mitch “treats esoteric ideas and movements with an even-handed intellectual studiousness that is too often lost in today’s raised-voice discussions.”

What is the Project for the Future?

What is the Project for the Future? And are the youngest generations up to the task? Let’s hope so because the future is their’s one way or the other.

Jeremy Johnson returns to discuss the Anthropocene era (now) when humans have become the first ever force of nature with the ability to shape the planet with a particular purpose in mind. So, you know… let’s make that purpose a good one, okay?

They’ve always said, “Young people don’t vote.” And for many generations, they’ve been right. But is that changing? Recent elections in the EU and in the US show that something may be happening… young people ARE voting. And guess what… there are MANY, MANY young people of voting age out there.

The time for creating a better future is now (or never).

“UFOs Exist and…”

Why is the US Department of Defense suddenly admitting the reality of UFOs? Why has the Post, the NY Times, and other mainstream media outlets suddenly changed the way they report on UFOs?

Is this a prelude to Full Disclosure?

Or is this actually all they know?

Author Jeremy Johnson is here to discuss the phenomenon, what the opening of the gate means, and what it means that we all “need to adjust” to this new reality.

Game of Thrones Decompression.

Or should that be “Decomposing?” Hmm…

Here is a fun talk I had with Jeremy Johnson on the last episode and last season of Game of Thrones.  Much like our talks on Westworld Season 2, this conversation took place immediately after the finale aired and represented our instant opinions. Jeremy and I dig pretty deep to talk about the philosophy, societal impact, and evolutionary qualities of the show.

And this is Part 1, too, because we did a follow up a few days later on Jeremy’s podcast, “Mutations” (which you can see here). For that show, we had a week’s worth of external critical reactions that we could react to. Also, in a fun continuation of something begun on this episode of WYT, we brainstorm alternative endings, both to the final episode and to the entire final season of Game of Thrones.

Long story short… I loved Game of Thrones and really wanted the ending to live up to what came before. Sadly, I don’t think it did. But there is still a lot to love here. And it did have its moments…

And this video, I think, will represent my last attempt to get the green screen right. I think I’ve just got to give up on that. Check out the last podcast video with Jeff Salzman and tell me if you agree that the big map on the wall of my office is better than the pixelated, almost-cool-but-not-really green screen.

What’s Your Theory… Now?

Well, I’m back!  Sorry about the long hiatus, but you know how it is with producing free media like this… sometimes you have to back burner it. But I never stopped thinking about the show and now, “What’s Your Theory?” is back. Let’s call this Season 2.

I’m lining up some great guests for more interviews that pertain, in one way or another, to the evolution of human consciousness and the perpetual struggle to ensure a future more like Star Trek and less like Planet of the Apes and it’s shaping up to be a great summer for WYT.

Besides regular interviews with new guests, I also have an idea to add shows with some of our regular guests that will be a little bit more formatted than in the past. The idea is to have conversations on current culture (politics, film &TV, internet culture… etc) as seen through the lens of our regulars’ various specialties.  Something like… “What happened in the world this week from an Integral Theory perspective with Jeff Salzman of the,” or in Consciousness Evolution with Jean Gebser scholar Jeremy Johnson.  So, basically, the same kind of conversations you are used to hearing with me and the WYT regulars, but on up to the minute topics, some heavy, some light, all fascinating and designed to not let the Apes win.

First up, our friend Jeff Salzman returns with an injection of wisdom to help get the show going again. This is a good one.

This week: Post-Modernism, Modernism, and Traditionalism have a hard enough time getting along as it is… How are the three dominant tiers of consciousness handling a blast from the past as President Trump injects the pre-traditional Warrior mode, dominated by fight-or-flight reactions and zero-sum politics into the modern world? Answer: Sad.

And: You say the Game of Thrones final season has bummed you out? Well, Jeff has only binge-watched through season 3… you know, when it was still all the things you loved about it. So I thought it would be fun to turn back the clock to the good days and take a look at peak GoT through Integral lenses. And you know what? I was right.

I hope you’ll stick around for a full Summer of WYT!

Remember it helps a lot when you subscribe to whatever delivery system you are using to watch or listen to the show. And don’t hesitate to ask a question or tell me what’s on your mind.

And finally, there is only one way to financially support the show, and that’s to open your mind and soul to the rocket-powered roller coaster of suspense, romance and epic mult-lifetime-spanning adventure of the Kings X Saga. These are books, people. The stay-up-all-night-reading kind.

Black Sheep Souls is on the way, but why wait when you can blow your mind today!

Danielle Eubank – One Artist/Five Oceans

So, I’ve promised more interviews with interesting people who are working to raise our collective level of consciousness, to add some provocative beauty to the present and provide some spiritual fuel to help us all move toward the best future we can build together… this is going to be a good one.

Ancol IX
Mozambique IX
Voyage to the Arctic
The Borobudur Ship
The Phoenicia

Danielle Eubank is an artist, world traveler and more than a little bit of an adventurer. In her early career, her time spent painting scenes of the Atlantic ocean from a fishing village in Asturias, Spain led to an invitation to serve as the Expedition Artist on aboard the Borobudur Ship –  a replica ancient Indonesian cargo vessel that rounded the Cape of Good Hope on a 10,000 mile voyage from Indonesia to Ghana, in 2003-4.  That experience cemented a commitment to paint the waters of all five of the earth’s oceans. in 2008-2010, she sailed on a replica of a 2,500-year-old Phoenician ship that circumnavigated Africa, a 20,000 mile trip originally made 500 years before the birth of Christ. Most recently (2014) sailed aboard a barquentine tall ship on an expedition to the High Arctic that took her to the northernmost human settlement on Earth. And soon, on a voyage set for early 2019 to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, where Danielle will complete her nearly 20 year quest and her landmark series of ocean paintings, One Artist Five Oceans.

Danielle’s art is exhibited all over the world, most particularly in galleries in Los Angeles and London, the two cities she’s most often called home throughout her career.

Full disclosure, my wife and I have called Danielle and her husband, Fletcher close friends for 20 years, some of her work graces the walls of our house, and Danielle even created an original oil painting for the cover of the deluxe paperback edition of my first novel.

I’ll also add before we get to our talk, if you usually listen to an audio only podcast of What’s Your Theory, this is a good episode to seek out the What’s Your Theory Youtube Channel because Danielle’s art is sublime and words aren’t going to cut it.  And don’t forget to subscribe to whichever medium you are using to hear us. It’s free and it really helps us.

And now… here’s the What’s Your Theory Interview with Danielle Eubank.

Blade Runners

In this episode, Steve is blown away by “Blade Runner 2049″ and Jeremy D. Johnson offers his usual fascinating insights and observations – plus a short but flawless Harrison Ford impression (around the 55 minute mark), as we return for the last Deep Dive of the summer and to dig into both “Blade Runner” movies!

Here is a link to the film review Jeremy wrote in for Blade Runner 2049 in 2017. This was the piece I stumbled across in cyberspace that led me to reach out to Jeremy as an early guest for What’s Your Theory?. So, it was the impetus for everything else we’ve done together since – Deep Dives into “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and every episode of “Westworld Season 2.”

In many ways the 2 Blade Runners put the perfect cap on our long running discussions on the past, present and future of A.I., the nature of mind, soul, and consciousness… and what it all means for the evolution of consciousness for our planet and our species.

It’s also a personal favorite of mine, maybe because it took me 2 viewings to really “get” how great Blade Runner 2049 really is.

Meanwhile, since Star Trek Discovery has delayed the release of it’s second season, we’re having a change of plan for the fall.  Jeremy Johnson will be back again in few weeks for another Deep Dive, this time into season 3 of “The Man in the High Castle.”

The show starts streaming Oct. 5th on Amazon Prime, so we’ll be digging into it shortly after then. It’s based on a 1962 novel from Phillip K. DIck (there’s that man again), and I’m guessing it’s a little scarier and more on the nose for the problems of today than Amazon suspected when they started production before 2016.

What’s it all about, you ask. Well… it’s kind of like this…

So don’t forget to subscribe and come back for that!

Watch and React – “Groundhog Day”

Ever feel like every day is the same and nothing you do matters?  Really? Hmm… well, maybe we should talk about this…

Jeff Salzman of returns for an Integral Chat where we watch and react to the 1993 classic of comedy, romance, and Consciousness Evolution… Groundhog Day!

Of course you’ve seen it. You probably love it. And if you are reading a post here, watching on youtube, or listening to a WYT podcast… you most likely have a profound thought or two about it.

This is a good one, folks. One of my all time favorite films and a really good talk with Jeff.

So kick back, stay a while, and don’t forget to subscribe wherever or however you are listening.

Thanks as always, and come back soon for another Deep Dive with Jeremy Johnson as we tackle “Bladerunner” and “Bladerunner 2049” in about one week from now.

2001: A Space Odyssey 5Oth Anniversary Deep Dive

As a podcast dedicated to Culture and Consciousness Evolution, it really makes sense to celebrate the 50th birthday of one the biggest cultural touchstones of consciousness evolution in the mass communication era by talking it all over with Jeremy D. Johnson.

Jeremy has an essay on 2001 up over @ Evolve and Ascend. com you can read right here… (and you should!).

I’m going on a brief vacation, but we’ll have lots more conversations coming up on WYT in August and into the fall. Jeff Salzman will be back in a couple of weeks, Jeremy will return in August to do a deep dive into both Blade Runner movies, and we will very likely be doing another episode by episode Dive into the second season of Star Trek: Discovery in the fall.

Coming Soon…

And very likely in this Fall…

So please do subscribe to this site or on your favorite podcast service or the youtube channel so somebody tells you when we’ve got something new. Thanks!

See you when I get back – Steve
